Network Performance Monitor

Network Performance monitoring is the collection and analysis of router and switch metrics for detecting congestion, delays and other errors such as retransmissions.

The main reasons for measuring Network Performance are capacity planning, detecting performance degradation for the end user proactively, and even billing.

Network Performance Metrics

Typical performance metrics to be collected are:

• bandwidth utilization
• packet loss
• round trip time
• delay
• jitter (variance in delay)

These metrics when collected over time, can highlight the quality of a link which can be used for SLA accountability with different carriers, etc.
