WBEM Overview

Web Based Enterprise Management (WBEM) is a set of management and Internet standard technologies to provide management of systems, networks, users and applications across multiple vendor environments. WBEM is a DMTF (Distributed Management Task Force) standard for network, server and application management. WBEM has been designed to be compatible with all the major existing management protocols, including SNMP and DMI.

The DMTF has developed a core set of standards that make up WBEM which includes the Common Information Model (CIM), CIM-XML, CIM Query Language, WBEM Discovery using Service Location Protocol (SLP) and WBEM Universal Resource Identifier (URI) mapping. In addition, the DMTF has developed a WBEM Management Profile template, allowing for simplified profile development to deliver a complete, standalone definition for the management of a particular system, subsystem, service or other entity.

Common Information Model (CIM)

CIM provides a common definition of management information for systems, networks, applications and services, and allows for vendor extensions. CIM’s common definitions enable vendors to exchange semantically rich management information between systems throughout the network.

CIM is composed of a Specification and a Schema. The Schema provides the actual model descriptions, while the Specification defines the details for integration with other management models.

CIM-XML

Includes representation of CIM using XML written in DTD, and CIM operations over HTTP
